Overnight Stops: Whitianga, Rotorua, Waitomo, Taupo, River Valley, Wellington, Auckland as well as a host of optional stop-offs.

Minimum trip time: 9 days
Maximum trip time: 12 months from 1st day of travel

AUCKLAND TO HOT WATER BEACH
Today we head out of the City of Sails towards the Coromandel Peninsula
and spend the afternoon at Cathedral Cove; only accessible on foot or
by kayak. This beautiful coastal spot is great for swimming, sea kayaking,
and spotting dolphins (if you’re lucky). We then carry on to Hot Water
Beach (rated one of the top ten beaches in the world by Lonely Planet)
where you can hit the beach with your shovel at low tide to dig your own
hot pool in the sand.

HOT WATER BEACH TO WAITOMO
After a fresh start, our first stop of the day is the Karangahake Scenic
Reserve. Here we explore a native bush-clad gorge, swing bridges and
learn a bit about New Zealand’s gold mining history. Next it’s onto
Waitomo (‘wai’ meaning water, ‘tomo’ meaning hole) where you will
get the chance to visit the world famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves. If
you’re feeling adventurous, here is your chance to go underground and
experience one of our top rated NZ activities with The Legendary Black
Water Rafting Co.

WAITOMO TO ROTORUA
We start the day with a walk through the Ruakuri Reserve (rated in the
top 10 short walks of New Zealand) before heading off toward Rotorua,
the Maori culture capital of New Zealand. Along the way we will stop
at The Shires Rest where you can take a tour through the enchanting
Hobbiton Movie Set, a certain highlight of your time in New Zealand.
Tonight, don’t miss the chance to stay overnight at Tamaki Marae. You
will experience a traditional Maori hangi (feast) and concert with Tamaki
Maori Village – a night not to be missed! Alternatively, try Hells Gate Mud
Baths, the Polynesian Spas or check out any of the 14 lakes in the district.
This is the first stop we recommend to make the most of our hop-on,
hop-off service and jump off the bus. Extra activities to spend your time
doing include biking in the Redwood Forest park, luging, visit Wai-o-Tapu
mud pools or Mt Tarawera.

ROTORUA TO TAUPO
The first activity of the day is exploring the geothermal reserve of
Te Puia, with New Zealand’s largest geyser and a chance to see a real live
Kiwi bird. A short hop and a leap down the road, we stop off at Taupo’s
famous Huka Falls. A popular backpacker destination, with New Zealand’s
biggest lake and plenty to keep you occupied, Taupo is rightly known as
the adventure capital of the North Island. Sign up here for the Tongariro
Crossing and Barbary Sailing on the stunning Great Lake Taupo (New
Zealand’s largest lake).

FREE DAY IN TAUPO
Get up before the sun and hike one of New Zealand’s great walks. The
Tongariro Crossing is an experience not to be missed! Home to Mt Doom
in Tolkien’s world, the scenery is sure to blow you away on this 8 hour
hike.Alternatively, enjoy a sleep-in and experience one of the many
activities on offer. A walk down to Spa Park to relax in the natural hot

springs by the river or adrenaline seeking with skydiving, bungy jumping,
sailing and jet boating.
We stay an extra night in Taupo because there’s so much to do,
however, if you are short on time you can skip this extra day,
timetable allowing.

TAUPO TO RIVER VALLEY
Today we head south around the “great lake” towards the World Heritage
Tongariro National Park for a picnic lunch and a walk through native
bush and waterfalls. In the afternoon we travel through to the ultimate

adventure lodge - River Valley, situated amongst towering cliffs and bush-
clad hills. The lodge offers grade five rafting on the Rangitikei River, scenic

horse riding, and stunning surroundings. Spend the evening enjoying a
delicious roast dinner and relaxing by the open fire.

RIVER VALLEY TO WELLINGTON
We head away late after a morning of white water rafting or horse riding,
and head through the rolling hills full of deer, cattle and sheep. We arrive
into New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, in the early evening. This city
is New Zealand’s undisputed capital of culture, the arts, restaurants,
fashion and nightlife.
We recommend you jump off the bus here too. Extra activities to do
during your time here include Te Papa Museum, visiting the Beehive
(New Zealand’s Parliament building), climb Mt Victoria and Sir Peter
Jackson’s Weta Workshop where you can go behind the scenes to learn
how the Lord of the Rings films were made.

WELLINGTON TO TAUPO
The drive today has beautiful rivers and lakes as well as Lord of the Rings
landscapes!

With an early start from windy Wellington we head north and pass
through Taihape, the gumboot capital of NZ. From here we head to the
Central Plateau, home of the Tongariro National Park. Then it’s through
to Taupo driving alongside New Zealand’s biggest lake. Taupo is rightly
known as the adventure capital of the North Island with plenty to keep
you entertained. Sign up here for the Tongariro Crossing, take a walk
down to Spa Park to relax in the natural hot springs by the river or for
the adrenaline seekers - skydiving, bungy jumping, sailing or jet boating.

TAUPO TO AUCKLAND (VIA ROTORUA)
This morning we head further north to Rotorua, renowned for its Maori
heritage and thermal activity. We stop at Kiwi Encounter, where you can
get up close and personal with our national icon – the Kiwi bird and get a
chance to see behind the scenes at the Kiwi breeding program. Then it’s
onwards through the rolling countryside to our lunch stop at Matamata
and the afternoon drive to Auckland, otherwise known as the ‘City of
Sails’. We call into the Kiwi Experience office for a chance to purchase
merchandise, confirm future bookings or extend your trip even further!
There is an option to hop-off the bus in Rotorua and if you have time it
is definitely worthwhile! Rotorua is known as the Maori culture capital
of New Zealand with the option to stay overnight at Tamaki Marae. You
will experience a traditional Maori hangi (feast) and concert with Tamaki
Maori Village – a night not to be missed! From here you can also book in a
trip to The Shires Rest where you can take a tour through the enchanting
Hobbiton Movie Set, a certain highlight of your time in New Zealand.
Alternatively, try Hells Gate Mud Baths, the Polynesian Spas, check out
any of the 14 lakes in the district, biking in the Redwood Forest park or
