Campervan Tips

Book Tongariro shuttles

The crossing is point-to-point and requires transport.

Respect geothermal areas

Stay on marked paths.

Check freedom camping rules

Local councils enforce restrictions.

Where to Stay on the North Island

New Zealand holiday parks (often called "Top 10" or DOC campgrounds) are plentiful and well kept. Rotorua, Taupo and Tongariro have holiday parks with hot pools, kitchens and powered sites. Department of Conservation (DOC) campgrounds near Tongariro and Lake Taupō are lower-cost options, but book ahead in summer.

  • Look for self-contained certification if you want to freedom camp.
  • Check local council signs for restrictions.
  • Book Tongariro Crossing shuttles in advance.

Experiences Worth Booking

Geothermal parks

Te Puia, Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu are the best-known thermal areas. Choose one or two rather than visiting all three.

Māori cultural experiences

Tamaki Māori Village and Te Puia offer cultural performances and hāngī meals.

Hobbiton

Book timed tickets in advance, especially in summer.

Waitomo glow worm caves

Guided boat trips and black-water rafting are the two most popular options.

Driving Notes

New Zealand drives on the left. Roads are generally excellent but winding, with speeds often lower than expected. Allow more time than distances suggest. Download offline maps before leaving Auckland. Our best campervan travel apps guide helps.

Seasonal Guide

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): warm and busy
  • Autumn (Mar–May): fewer crowds and settled weather
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): cold, with snow around Tongariro
  • Spring (Sep–Nov): changeable weather, lambs and flowers

Costs

Holiday parks cost NZ$40–$70 per night, and activities can add up. Read how much campervan hire costs for general planning and the campervan rental bond page for rental tips.

Extending Your Trip

Campsites and Freedom Camping in the North Island

New Zealand has a strong network of holiday parks and Department of Conservation campsites. Freedom camping is restricted and usually requires a self-contained vehicle, so check local council rules before you park for the night.

  • Auckland: holiday parks and motorhome parks close to the city.
  • Matamata and Hobbiton: holiday parks within a short drive of the movie set.
  • Waitomo: holiday parks close to the glowworm caves.
  • Rotorua: holiday parks around Lake Rotorua and Blue Lake, many with thermal pools.
  • Taupo: parks beside the lake and in town, some with hot spring baths.
  • Tongariro region: DOC campsites and holiday parks near the national park, useful for the Alpine Crossing.
